ALBAN VINEYARDS "Patrina" Estate Syrah 2008 Edna Valley
ALBAN "PATRINA" Estate Syrah 2008
Edna Valley, CA
My father-in-law has been collecting the scrumptious Alban "Patrina" Estate Syrah religiously since 2009. Now Alban first began producing the Patrina in 2008 and he and I have spent the better part of the last year searching for the EXTREMELY elusive and highly acclaimed 2008 vintage. Between the two of us we have called or emailed over 50 wine shops all across the U.S. as well as Europe and the only thing we found was one disappointing lead after another. About a month ago we had both decided enough was enough with these scarce 08's when Loraine Alban herself offered up a hot tip on a shop that might just have a few of these impossible-to-find bottles still in stock. Well low and behold they did let's just say we BOUGHT THEM ALL and even have fourteen pristinely aged and perfectly stored bottles left over to offer to you our VIP's!
"Bright purple. Heady scents of blueberry, boysenberry and cassis, with a smoky topnote. Broad, sappy and nicely concentrated, offering sweet dark fruit flavors complemented by notes of Indian spices, olive, and bitter chocolate. A rich, deep but lively syrah that finishes spicy and long, with very soft tannins.
According to Robert Parker: "One of the pioneers of world-class Rhone varietal-based wines produced in California’s Central Coast, John Alban had the courage and foresight to plant Viognier, Syrah, Grenache, and more recently, Mourvedre, in a region where no one else believed these grapes would thrive. His wines offer off-the-chart levels of concentration, and many of them are capable of lasting three to four decades. These flavor-filled wines are all made from frightfully low yields, and are now being given extremely long aging in barrel, the top Syrah cuvees spending 36-40 months in barrel. The results are wines that are nearly beyond belief in terms of richness and density. These are true artisanal wines meant for long-term cellaring that should only be purchased by patient connoisseurs who are able to defer their gratification for 8-10 years."
"I tell ya, the hardest part of this whole ordeal was having to open one of the elusive 08's with my Father-in-law over a grilled Ribeye steak dinner and make sure that the perfectly aged and stored Syrah was just as delicious and as we had hoped. The wine was amazing! Still bright purple with heady scents of blueberry, boysenberry and cassis, with a smoky topnote. Broad, sappy and nicely concentrated, offering sweet dark fruit flavors complemented by notes of Indian spices, olive, and bitter chocolate. A rich, deep but lively syrah that finishes spicy and long, with very soft tannins. Absolutely delicious! know, I know, this really is a tough job sometimes ;) "
